ABSTRACT Length-weight (LWR) and length-length (LLR) relationships are widely used in management programs and monitoring of fish stocks. We estimated the LWR and LLR of 10 fish species sampled from nine streams of the lower reach of the Iguassu River Basin, Paraná, Brazil. All LWR fits were significant, with b values ranging from 2.37 to 3.62 and an average value of 3.07. Most species showed isometric growth. Significant differences in the LWR between sexes were observed only for Phalloceros harpagos Lucinda, 2008 in the Três Barras stream. All LLR fits were significant, with b values ranging from 0.98 to 1.25 and an average value of 1.15. Significant differences between sexes for the LLR were observed for Rhamdia voulezi Haseman, 1911 in the Arroio Passo Liso stream. First records of the LWR for four species - Ancistrus mullerae Bifi, Pavanelli & Zawadzki, 2009, Bryconamericus pyahu Azpelicueta, Casciotta & Almirón, 2003, Cambeva stawiarski (Miranda Ribeiro, 1968), and Cambeva taroba (Wosiacki & Garavello, 2004) - and the LLR for six species - A. mullerae, B. pyahu, C. davisi, C. stawiarski, C. taroba, and P. harpagos - and a new record of maximum standard length for two species - C. taroba and B. pyahu - are presented.

Resumo: Objetivo Espécies de peixes não nativas têm sido intimamente relacionadas aos sérios danos à biodiversidade aquática devido aos efeitos negativos sobre a fauna nativa. Nosso objetivo é relatar a primeira e alarmante ocorrência do bagre não nativo “jaú” Zungaro jahu na bacia do rio Iguaçu acima das Cataratas do Iguaçu, uma ecorregião neotropical com alto endemismo de peixes. Métodos As amostragens dos peixes foram realizadas com rede de emalhar de fundo no Reservatório de Segredo, onde foram anestesiados em cloridrato de benzocaína e fixados em formol em campo, posteriormente foram identificados em laboratório e depositados no Museu de História Natural do Capão da Imbuia (MHNCI). Resultados Nossas amostragens recentes na bacia do rio Iguaçu registraram um indivíduo não nativo do bagre “jaú” Zungaro jahu no Reservatório de Segredo. Conclusões Pretendemos, principalmente, alertar sobre o risco de expansão da ocorrência desta espécie não nativa ao longo da cascata de reservatórios do rio Iguaçu, onde potencialmente poderá desenvolver sérios danos à cadeia trófica, predação de espécies endêmicas de pequeno porte e competição, especialmente nos locais onde o pimelodídeo endêmico e ameaçado de extinção “surubim-do-iguaçu” (Steindachneridion melanodermatum) mantém populações viáveis, atualmente restrita à bacia do Baixo rio Iguaçu, exibindo sinais recentes do efeito de gargalo.

Abstract: Aim Non-native fish species have been closely related to serious damage to aquatic biodiversity due to their negative effects on native fauna. We aim to report the first and alarming occurrence of the non-native catfish “jaú” Zungaro jahu in the Iguaçu River basin above the Iguaçu Falls, a high-endemism Neotropical ecoregion for fish. Methods Fish samplings were taken with a bottom gill net in the Segredo Reservoir, where they were anesthetized in benzocaine hydrochloride and fixed in formaldehyde in the field, later identified in the laboratory and housed at the Museu de História Natural do Capão da Imbuia (MHNCI). Results Our recent samplings in the Iguaçu River basin recorded one non-native individual of the catfish “jaú” Zungaro jahu in the Segredo Reservoir. Conclusions We mainly intend to alarm about the risk of expansion of the occurrence of this non-native species throughout the cascading reservoirs in the Iguaçu River where it could potentially develop serious damage to the trophic chain, predation of small-sized endemic species, and competition, especially in the sites where the endemic and endangered pimelodid “surubim-do-iguaçu” (Steindachneridion melanodermatum) maintains viable populations, currently restricted to the Lower Iguaçu River basin exhibiting recent signs of a population bottleneck.

Resumo: Conhecer a ictiofauna de uma bacia hidrográfica compreende condição mínima necessária para que se possam implantar quaisquer medidas de exploração, manejo ou preservação dos recursos hídricos e pesqueiros. Apesar de sua relevância, o número de espécies de peixes de toda a bacia hidrográfica do rio Iguaçu ainda é incerto. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi compilar as espécies de peixes que ocorrem no extenso trecho da bacia acima das Cataratas do Iguaçu. Além disso, registramos o nível de ameaça de extinção às espécies nativas, a origem das espécies não nativas e suas principais vias de introdução. Para isso foi realizado um levantamento por meio de consultas a coleções ictiológicas, bem como aos bancos de dados online, além de revisão de literatura por meio do uso das plataformas de buscas Thomson Reuters, Scielo e Elsevier - ScienceDirect, que abordavam o tópico “ictiofauna da bacia do rio Iguaçu” e o período de tempo incluiu todos os trabalhos publicados até março de 2020. O levantamento compilou ao todo 133 espécies, distribuídas em nove ordens, 29 famílias e 72 gêneros. Em toda a extensão da bacia foram registradas 79 espécies de peixes. Nas unidades hidrográficas do médio e baixo rio Iguaçu foram registradas 119 espécies (40 exclusivas) e na unidade hidrográfica do alto rio Iguaçu foram registradas 93 espécies (14 exclusivas). A taxa de endemismo para a bacia do rio Iguaçu (aproximadamente 69%) contrasta com as 40 espécies de peixes não nativos registradas (aproximadamente 30% do total de espécies na bacia). Os sucessivos barramentos, a perda de qualidade de habitats e o aumento no número de espécies não nativas são ameaças às espécies autóctones, especialmente às endêmicas, as quais apresentam aproximadamente 20% listadas em alguma categoria de ameaça ao risco de extinção. Ressaltamos que o monitoramento constante da ictiofauna é necessário para a descoberta de espécies supostamente não descritas, bem como para a aplicação de estratégias de manejo para mitigar os efeitos negativos e promover o controle da disseminação de espécies não nativas.

Abstract: Knowledge of the ichthyofauna of a hydrographic basin is the minimum necessary condition for the implementation of any measures for the exploration, management or preservation of water and fishing resources. Despite its relevance, the number of fish species across the Iguassu River basin is still uncertain. Thus, the objective of this study was to compile the fish species that occur in the extensive stretch of the basin above the Iguassu Falls. In addition, we recorded the level of threat of extinction for native species, the origin of nonnative species, and their main vectors of introduction. To achieve this goal, a survey was carried out through consultations with ichthyological collections as well as online databases. Also, a literature review was conducted using the search platforms Thomson Reuters, SciELO and Elsevier’s ScienceDirect to locate all articles published by March 2020 that addressed the topic “ichthyofauna in the Iguassu River basin”. The survey compiled a total of 133 fish species distributed in nine orders, 29 families and 72 genera. Seventy-nine fish species were recorded that occur throughout the entire length of the basin, 119 species that occur in the hydrographic units of the middle and lower Iguassu River (40 exclusive) and 93 species that occur in the hydrographic unit of the upper Iguassu River (14 exclusive). The endemism rate shown here for the Iguassu River basin (approximately 69%) contrasts with the 40 nonnative fish species recorded (approximately 30% of the total species in the basin). Successive impoundments, reductions in habitat quality and the increase in the number of nonnative species are the main threats to native species, especially to the endemic species; approximately 20% of these species were listed in some category of threat of extinction. We emphasize that constant monitoring of ichthyofauna is necessary to discover putatively undescribed species, as well as for the application of management strategies to mitigate the negative effects and promote the control of the spread of nonnative species.

Resumo Nós testamos os efeitos da ruralização e da urbanização sobre os índices de diversidade funcional e da composição de traços funcionais em assembleias de peixes de riachos Neotropicais. Amostras foram feitas em 24 riachos distribuídos nas bacias dos rios Pirapó, Piquiri, Paraná III e Iguaçu. O uso do solo foi categorizado por meio das porcentagens de vegetação, ocupação rural e urbana. Testes estatísticos revelaram correlações negativas bivariadas entre a dispersão funcional e a proporção de vegetação. Os resultados indicaram que maior percentual de ocupação rural ou urbana está associado ao aumento da dispersão funcional. Nas análises de composição de traços foram observadas alterações significativas em resposta à urbanização, enquanto apenas o aumento de herbívoros respondeu à ruralização. À medida que a área de vegetação é reduzida, a composição de traços muda, com redução nas proporções de espécies com intolerância à hipóxia, comportamento reprodutivo migratório, fertilização externa e boca subterminal, e aumento da proporção daquelas com cuidado parental, detritivoria, fertilização interna e boca superior. Portanto, espécies que apresentam essas características têm maior probabilidade de desaparecer dos riachos à medida que a urbanização avança. Em resumo, a urbanização foi relacionada a maior alteração na composição de traços funcionais do que a ruralização.

Abstract We tested the effects of ruralization and urbanization on the functional diversity indices and the composition of functional traits of Neotropical stream fish communities. The study was carried out in 24 streams of the Pirapó, Piquiri, Paraná III and Iguassu river basins. Land use in the watershed was categorized as percentages of native vegetation, rural occupation and urban occupation. Statistical tests revealed negative bivariate correlations between functional dispersion and the proportion of native vegetation in the watershed. The results indicate that a higher percentage of rural or urban occupation is associated with increased functional dispersion. In the analyzes of trait composition, significant alterations were observed in response to urbanization while only the increase in herbivory responded to ruralization. As the area of native vegetation is reduced by urbanization, the trait composition changes, with reduced proportions of species with intolerance to hypoxia, migratory reproductive behavior, external fertilization, and subterminal mouth, and increased proportions of species with parental care, detritivory, internal fertilization, and an upper mouth. Therefore, fish species that have these specific characteristics are more likely to disappear from streams as urbanization progresses. In summary, urbanization was related to a greater change in the composition of functional traits than ruralization.

Resumen Introducción: Comprender los aspectos de la biología reproductiva de los peces es un paso fundamental para la aplicación de estrategias efectivas para la administración sostenible de los recursos pesqueros. Objetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la proporción sexual, el período reproductivo y la longitud en la primera madurez para 30 especies de peces capturados en el río Verde, cuenca alta del río Paraná, Brasil. Métodos: Se tomaron muestras de peces mensualmente de noviembre 2010 a marzo 2011 y de octubre 2011 a febrero 2012, y trimestralmente de mayo hasta agosto de 2011 y 2012; totalizando 14 muestras. En el laboratorio, los peces capturados fueron medidos y pesados. Además, el sexo y la etapa de desarrollo gonadal se identificaron macroscópicamente. Posteriormente, se determinó la proporción sexual y se analizó si había diferencias significativas utilizando el método de chi-cuadrado (χ²). El período reproductivo fue determinado con el uso de las etapas de desarrollo gonadal y el índice gonadosomático. Finalmente, la longitud en la primera madurez fue estimada solamente para las especies que presentaron individuos con suficientes gónadas inmaduras y maduras para ajustar el modelo. Resultados: De los individuos capturados, el 51.5 % fueron machos y el 48.5 % hembras. Quince especies presentaron diferencias significativas en la proporción sexual. El período reproductivo para la mayoría de las especies ocurrió de octubre a febrero, con picos reproductivos en noviembre, diciembre y enero. La longitud en la primera madurez fue estimada solamente para cinco especies, incluyendo Salminus brasiliensis, una especie clave. Conclusiones: La proporción sexual reveló que para muchas especies hay predominio de machos sobre hembras, lo cual no se esperaba para este parámetro. El período reproductivo sigue el mismo patrón observado en peces neotropicales. Sin embargo, vale la pena señalar que algunas especies están comenzando su reproducción en el mes de agosto. Por último, estimar la longitud en la primera madurez para la mayoría de los peces neotropicales sigue siendo un reto, lo que puede llevar a dificultades en el uso de medidas de protección para mantener la pesca y conservar las especies de peces.

Abstract Introduction: Understanding the various aspects of the reproductive biology of fish is a key step towards applying effective strategies for sustainable management of fishery resources. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the sex ratio, reproductive period and lengths at first maturity for 30 fish species caught in the Verde River, upper Paraná River Basin, Brazil. Methods: Fish were sampled monthly from November 2010 to March 2011 and from October 2011 to February 2012, and sampled quarterly from May to August in 2011 and 2012; totaling 14 samples. Fish were measured and weighed in the laboratory. In addition, gender and gonadal developmental stage were identified macroscopically. Subsequently, the sex ratio was determined and significant differences were tested using the chi-square (χ²) method. The reproductive period was determined with the use of gonadal developmental stages and the gonadosomatic index. Lastly, length at first maturity was estimated only for the species that presented individuals with sufficient immature and mature gonads to adjust the model. Results: Of the captured individuals, 51.5 % were male, and 48.5 % were female. Fifteen species showed significant differences in their sex ratios. The reproductive period for most species occurred from October to February, with reproductive peaks in November, December and January. The length at first maturity was estimated for only five species, including Salminus brasiliensis, a keystone species. Conclusions: The sex ratios revealed that for many species, there is a predominance of males over females, which was not expected for this parameter. The reproductive period follows the same pattern observed in Neotropical fish. However, it is noteworthy that some species are starting their reproduction in August. Lastly, estimating length at first maturity for most Neotropical fish remains a challenge, which may lead to difficulties in the use of protective measures to maintain fisheries and conserve fish species.

Resumo: Objetivo Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma análise cienciométrica para avaliar e quantificar a contribuição do fator de condição relativo e das principais ideias propostas por ‘Le Cren, 1951’ em estudos sobre a saúde de um indivíduo ou população em ambientes aquáticos. Especificamente, respondemos as seguintes questões (i) quais foram as tendências espaciais e temporais nas citações de ‘Le Cren, 1951’? (ii) quais revistas citaram ‘Le Cren, 1951’ mais frequentemente? (iii) em quais tipos de ambientes aquáticos e organismos o fator de condição relativo tem sido mais frequentemente aplicado? (iv) quais as principais aplicações abordadas em ‘Le Cren, 1951’ foram mais frequentemente utilizadas por cientistas pesqueiros? E (v) quais métodos (i.e. índice de Quételet ou índice de massa corpórea, fator de condição de Fulton, fator de condição de Le Cren, peso relativo, índice residual ou índice de massa escalonado) usados para estimar o fator de condição, identificados nos trabalhos que citaram ‘Le Cren, 1951’, têm sido mais frequentemente usados? Além disso, nós enfatizamos que o fator de condição relativo proposto por Le Cren em 1951 ainda é o principal método utilizado para estimar a condição corporal de um indivíduo ou população. Conclusões Assim, a contribuição significativa de Le Cren para o estudo da saúde animal é inegável e nós enfatizamos que entre os métodos, identificados nos artigos que citaram ‘Le Cren, 1951’, para estimar a condição corporal, o fator de condição relativo proposto por Le Cren ainda é o mais utilizado.

Abstract: Aim In this paper we present a scientometric analysis aimed at to assess and quantify the contribution of Le Cren’s condition factor and the main ideas advanced by ‘Le Cren, 1951’ to studies on the health of individuals or populations in aquatic environments. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: (i) what are the temporal and spatial citation trends of ‘Le Cren, 1951’?; (ii) Which journals cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ most frequently?; (iii) In which types of aquatic environments and organisms have Le Cren’s condition factor been most commonly applied?; (iv) Which of the main applications addressed in ‘Le Cren, 1951’ have been most frequently used by fisheries scientists?; (v) Which of the methods (i.e., Quételet’s index or body mass index, Fulton’s condition factor, Le Cren’s condition factor, relative weight, residual index and scaled mass index) used to estimate condition factor identified in the papers that cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ have been most frequently used? In addition, the main criticisms of the use of the relative condition factor are discussed. Methods We carried out a scientometric analysis on the papers published from 1951 to December 2015 that cited Le Cren’s article. The papers were obtained from the Thomson Reuters database (ISI Web of Knowledge, apps.isiknowledge.com) in May 2016. Results In total, 1128 papers were assessed. The number of citations increased significantly over time. Most citations occurred in two journals (Journal of Fish Biology and Journal of Applied Ichthyology). Most of papers were carried out in marine environments. In addition, we show that Le Cren's paper has been cited mainly in articles that estimate the condition factor or the weight-length relationship of populations. Finally, we emphasize that the relative condition factor proposed by Le Cren in 1951 is still the main method used to estimate the body condition of an individual or population. Conclusions Le Cren's significant contribution to animal well-being is undeniable, and we emphasize that among the methods identified in the papers that cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ that estimated body condition, the relative condition factor proposed by Le Cren in 1951 is still the most commonly used method.

Resumo: O conhecimento das espécies de peixes existentes em uma bacia hidrográfica é condição mínima necessária para a implantação de qualquer medida de manejo dos recursos hídricos e pesqueiros. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma atualização da composição das espécies de peixes da bacia do rio Piquiri, sistema do alto rio Paraná, proveniente de recentes informações contidas em estudos divulgados na literatura especializada e registros de espécies depositadas em coleções ictiológicas. A atualização do levantamento ictiofaunístico da bacia do rio Piquiri revelou a ocorrência de 152 espécies, as quais foram distribuídas em oito ordens, 31 famílias e 89 gêneros. Vinte por cento das espécies foram consideradas não nativas. O principal vetor de introdução foi a construção da barragem de Itaipu e seu sistema de transposição. Três por cento das espécies apresentaram alguma ameaça de extinção e 11% foram classificadas como migradoras. A bacia do rio Piquiri comporta grande número de espécies, algumas delas raras, ameaçadas de extinção, migradoras, endêmicas e até mesmo desconhecidas pela ciência. Dessa forma, a manutenção da integridade da bacia promoverá a persistência da biodiversidade regional.

Abstract: Knowledge of the fish species in river basins is among the minimum requirements for the management of water and fish resources. Therefore, the aim of this study was to update the fish species composition of the Piquiri River basin, upper Paraná River basin. Data were gathered from recent information published in specialized literature and records for ichthyology collections. This update reports the occurrence of 152 fish species distributed in 8 orders, 31 families, and 89 genera. Non-native species accounted for 20% of all species, and the construction of the Itaipu Power Plant and its fish ladder were the main vectors of introduction. Three percent of the species were endangered, and 11% were classified as migratory. The Piquiri River basin harbors a large number of species, some of which are rare, endangered, migratory, endemic, and even unknown by science. Because of this, maintaining the integrity of this river basin will support the persistence of regional biodiversity.

Spatial and temporal variations in food supply play a crucial role in the determination of the patterns of food use by fish species. This study evaluated spatial and temporal variations in food utilization by small fish species of the Verde River, Upper Paraná River Basin, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Samplings were conducted in the rainy and dry periods, from November 2010 to August 2012, using trawls, cast nets and gillnets, in nine sampling sites grouped into three biotopes: upstream and downstream of the Branca Waterfall, and tributary. The stomach contents of 3,263 individuals of 12 small species were examined according to the volumetric method. Altogether, 31 food items were identified. Overall seed consumption was greater in the rainy period, and the consumption of terrestrial plants was greater in the dry period. Hymenoptera was an important item in the diet, but the proportions in the consumption of this item was different between biotopes and periods. The consumption of Coleoptera and Isoptera was expressive only downstream of the Branca Waterfall in the rainy period, and aquatic plant was mostly consumed in the tributary in the dry period. Significant differences were detected in the diet composition between biotopes, hydrological periods and also the interaction between these two factors. Allochthonous resources were clearly the most consumed by the species in all biotopes, especially during the rainy period. The dietary overlap between species, although showing significant spatial and temporal differences, was low (0.4) for about 60% of species pairs. Thus, it is concluded that spatial and temporal changes in the utilization of food resources by small fish were related to physiographic differences of the channel and the surroundings, which contributed to the significance of seasonal changes in the diet, also reflecting the low dietary overlap between species.

OBJETIVO: Neste estudo nós avaliamos os efeitos do regime hidrológico (seca e cheia) e do ciclo diário (horários) na atividade alimentar e na composição da dieta de Serrapinus notomelas em bancos de Eichhornia azurea em um ambiente raso da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, Brasil. MÉTODOS: Os peixes foram amostrados mensalmente, entre junho/2007 e maio/2008, com armadilhas colocadas dentro dos bancos de macrófitas. Foram examinados 1038 estômagos. A atividade alimentar foi avaliada através do grau de enchimento médio dos estômagos. Para sumarizar e interpretar os resultados da composição da dieta por período (seca e cheia) e ciclo diário (horários) foi aplicada uma NMS. RESULTADOS: A atividade alimentar de S. notomelas não diferiu significativamente entre os períodos de seca e cheia, mas foi significativamente diferente durante o ciclo diário. A atividade alimentar foi mais intensa no período diurno e ao entardecer tanto na seca quanto na cheia. Diferenças significativas na composição da dieta foram verificadas, entre os períodos de seca e cheia, e entre os horários do dia. Na seca, a dieta de S. notomelas foi composta principalmente por algas e na cheia por Cladocera. As algas foram consumidas mais intensamente no período diurno e Cladocera ao amanhecer e ao entardecer. CONCLUSÕES: Nossos resultados indicam que o regime hidrológico afeta a composição da dieta de S. notomelas, mas não afeta a atividade alimentar. As variações sazonais na composição da dieta provavelmente estão associadas às variações temporais na abundância dos recursos alimentares regidas pelo regime hidrológico. Assim, quando a densidade de Cladocera foi baixa (seca), S. notomelas consumiu predominantemente algas, mas quando Cladocera foi abundante (cheia) passou a ser um recurso alimentar importante para S. notomelas.

AIM: In this paper we assessed the effects of flooding (low and high water period) on the feeding activity and diet composition of Serrapinus notomelas in patches of the macrophyte Eichhornia azurea in a shallow floodplain lake (upper Paraná River Floodplain, Brazil). We also assessed the variations of diet composition and feeding activity along the diel cycle. METHODS: Traps were used to catch the fish inside of macrophyte patches monthly from June/2007 to May/2008. A total of 1038 stomachs were examined. We assessed the feeding activity with the mean stomach fullness degree method. To summarize and support the results of diet composition in the different periods (low and high water periods) and times (dawn, light period, and dusk), was applied a nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS). RESULTS: The feeding activity of S. notomelas did not differ between low and high water periods, but it differed along the diel cycle. The feeding activity was higher during the light period and dusk, at both the low and high water period. The diet composition differed significantly between low and high water periods, and also along the diel cycle. In the low water the diet of S. notomelas was composed mainly by algae and in the high water by Cladocera. Algae were consumed mainly during the light period while Cladocera in dawn and dusk. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the oscillations in the water level affect the diet composition, but not the feeding activity of S. notomelas. These seasonal changes are probably related to the temporal abundance of food resources, thus, when Cladocera density was low (low water), S. notomelas consumed mainly algae but when Cladocera was more abundant (high water), it became a common food resource.

Estudos sobre as assembleias de peixes em riachos têm enfatizado que a compreensão da relação entre as espécies e seu ambiente é crucial para a conservação das espécies. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de alterações nas variáveis abióticas sobre a composição e estrutura das assembleias de peixes em riachos urbanos com diferentes percentuais de urbanização no Brasil. A composição e estrutura das assembleias de peixes mostraram diferenças significativas ao longo do gradiente de urbanização dos riachos. Espécies tolerantes e não-nativas foram encontradas em locais mais urbanizados. A análise de correlação de matrizes indicou uma relação entre as variáveis abióticas e do arranjo espacial da estrutura e composição nas assembleias de peixes. Variáveis abióticas, tais como fósforo total, oxigênio dissolvido e condutividade, determinaram a distribuição das assembleias de peixes. Riachos sem influência urbana exibem naturalmente baixa riqueza específica, sugerindo ser suscetíveis à perda de espécies e redução da diversidade. Assim, mudanças induzidas pela urbanização na qualidade da água ou no regime hidrológico podem exacerbar esses impactos

Studies on fish assemblages in streams point out, that understanding the relationship between species and their environment is crucial for conservation. The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of changes in abiotic variables on the composition and structure of fish assemblages in Neotropical urban streams from southern Brazil with different levels of urbanization. The composition and structure of fish assemblages showed significant differences along the urbanization gradient observed in the streams. Tolerant and non-native species were found in more urbanized sites. A matrix correlation revealed a relationship between abiotic variables and the spatial pattern of structure and composition of fish assemblages. Abiotic variables, such as total phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity, determined the distribution of fish assemblages. Streams without urban influence exhibited intrinsically low species richness, suggesting that they are highly susceptible to species loss and diversity reduction. Thus, changes in water quality or hydrological conditions induced by urbanization may intensify these impacts.

O consumo, a mortalidade natural e as estimativas de crescimento são parâmetros importantes para a construção de modelos pesqueiros e ecossistêmicos. Dessa forma, neste trabalho foram calculados os parâmetros k (constante de crescimento da equação de von Bertalanffy), Loo (comprimento assintótico), Woo (peso assintótico), Ar (índice da nadadeira caudal), M (mortalidade natural) e Q/B (consumo/biomassa) para peixes em reservatórios. Além disso, foram exploradas possíveis relações entre esses parâmetros para 135 espécies de peixes amostradas em 30 reservatórios no estado do Paraná, sul do Brasil. O comprimento máximo (Lmax) variou de 2,60 a 79,00 cm, Loo de 2,73 a 85,05 cm, Woo de 0,23 a 9.490,26 g, k de 0,01 a 2,38 ano-1, Ar de 0,03 a 3,60, M de 0,16 a 2,82 ano-1, e Q/B de 3,31 a 67,18. Correlações significativas foram observadas entre todos os pares de parâmetros, exceto para Ar e k, Ar e Loo e para M e Q/B. As estimativas aqui apresentadas podem ser úteis para a construção de modelos Ecopath, tanto em outras regiões tropicais, como no Brasil, onde os modelos ecossistêmicos estão em amplo estágio de desenvolvimento.

Consumption, natural mortality, and growth are important parameters for the construction for both fisheries and ecosystems models. We estimated k (growth constant of the von Bertalanffy's function), Loo 1(asymptotic length), Woo (asymptotic weight), Ar (caudal fin index), M (natural mortality), and Q/B (consumption/biomass ratio) for several fish species inhabiting reservoirs. We explored possible relationships among these parameters for 135 fish species sampled in thirty reservoirs in the State of Paraná, southern Brazil. Maximum length (Lmax) varied from 2.60 to 79.00 cm, Loo from 2.73 to 85.05 cm, Woo from 0.23 to 9,490.26 g, k from 0.01 to 2.38 yr-1, Ar from 0.03 to 3.60, M from 0.16 to 2.82 yr-1, and Q/B from 3.31 to 67.18. Significant correlations were observed between most pairs of parameters, except for Ar and k, Ar and Loo , and for M and Q/B. The estimates presented here may be useful for constructing Ecopath models, both in Brazil and other tropical regions, where the use of ecosystem modeling is growing.

O padrão de colorido é um caráter muito importante na sistemática e alfa taxonomia de espécies do gênero Gymnotus. O objetivo deste trabalho foi apresentar evidências de variação no padrão de colorido em populações locais de Gymnotus pantanal encontrados nos córregos Jacutinga e Pinheirinho, bacia do alto rio Paraná, sul do Brasil. A variação no padrão de colorido foi corroborada por dados morfológicos e citogenéticos. Nossos resultados demonstram a importância da integração de dados morfológicos e citogenéticos na taxonomia de espécies de Gymnotus.

Color pattern is an important character in the systematics and alpha-taxonomy of electric fishes of the genus Gymnotus. This paper presents evidence of color variation in populations of G. pantanal found in the streams Jacutinga and Pinheirinho, in the upper Paraná River basin, southern Brazil. Color variations were corroborated for morphological and cytogenetic data. Our results show the importance of integrating morphologic and cytogenetic data in the taxonomy of the Gymnotus species.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a abundância, os atributos da assembleia e a distribuição espacial e temporal de larvas de peixes, bem como a relação dessas variáveis com alguns fatores abióticos, em duas lagoas com diferentes graus de conexão com o rio Paraná, Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande, PR, Brasil. As amostragens foram realizadas em quatro locais, dois em cada lagoa. As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente à noite durante três períodos de desova (outubro a março) de 2001 a 2005, com o auxílio de redes de plâncton. A maior diversidade e abundância foram verificadas na lagoa Saraiva, sendo identificados 25 táxons. Na lagoa Xambrê somente foram capturadas espécies sedentárias e as mais abundantes foram Plagioscion squamosissimus e Hypophthalmus edentatus. Nessa lagoa as maiores ocorrências foram verificadas no período II. Na lagoa Saraiva as maiores capturas foram de Moenkhausia aff. intermedia, Hyphessobrycon sp. e Bryconamericus stramineus, entretanto, larvas de espécies migradoras também foram registradas. Nessa lagoa, as maiores ocorrências foram no período III. A abundância de larvas foi influenciada pela temperatura da água e pela condutividade elétrica. A elevada diversidade e abundância registradas na lagoa Saraiva podem ser atribuídas a sua conectividade com o rio Paraná, enquanto que a baixa diversidade e abundância observadas na lagoa Xambrê podem estar relacionadas ao seu isolamento. Os resultados obtidos com este estudo demonstram a importância das lagoas marginais para o desenvolvimento inicial dos peixes, tanto para espécies sedentárias como migradoras. Ambas as lagoas podem ser consideradas de extrema importância ecológica e altamente susceptíveis a impactos, onde qualquer interferência sem conhecimentos prévios pode causar danos irreversíveis.

The objective of this study was to assess the abundance, attributes of assemblages, and spatial and temporal distributions of fish larvae and their relationships with some abiotic variables in two floodplain lakes with different degrees of connection to the Paraná River in Ilha Grande National Park, PR, Brazil. Four sampling sites were chosen, two in each floodplain lake. Night samples were taken with plankton nets during three spawning seasons (monthly, from October to March) from 2001 to 2005. The highest diversity and abundance were recorded at Saraiva Lake, with 25 taxa being identified. In Xambrê Lake, only sedentary species were captured, and the most abundant species were Plagioscion squamosissimus and Hypophthalmus edentatus. The greatest abundance of larvae was found in the second spawning season. In the Saraiva Lake, the most abundant species were Moenkhausia aff. intermedia, Hyphessobrycon sp., and Bryconamericus stramineus, but larvae of known migratory species were also documented. In this lake, the greatest abundance of larvae was found in the third spawning. Larvae abundance was influenced by water temperature and conductivity. The high diversity and abundance recorded in Saraiva Lake may be a result of its connectivity with the Paraná River, and the low diversity and abundance observed at Xambrê Lake are likely due to its isolation from the river. This work shows the importance of these lagoons for fish development, for both sedentary and migratory species. Both lagoons may be considered to have extreme ecological importance and they are also extremely susceptible to impacts, so any careless disturbance may cause irreversible damage.

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar alterações na dieta de um peixe piscívoro (Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro) após mudanças na abundância de um peixe forrageiro (Moenkhausia dichroura) durante a colonização de um reservatório. Os peixes foram amostrados mensalmente entre março/2000 e fevereiro/2001 (período I) e março/2003 e fevereiro/2004 (período II), no reservatório de Manso (Mato Grosso, Brasil). A abundância de M. dichroura foi significativamente diferente entre os períodos, representando 9,6% dos indivíduos no período I e 66,4% no período II. No período I A. pantaneiro consumiu 41 presas, enquanto que no período II foram registradas 14 presas, sendo que M. dichroura foi a presa mais consumida, passando a representar 95% da dieta, enquanto no período I representava apenas 15%. A relação entre o tamanho do predador e da presa foi positiva em ambos os períodos, porém significativamente diferente. No período II pequenos e grandes predadores consumiram principalmente pequenas presas (M. dichroura). Os resultados mostraram que A. pantaneiro consumiu, no período II, a presa mais abundante e disponível, alterando a composição de sua dieta, amplitude do nicho alimentar e tamanho da presa. Estas alterações provavelmente causaram um decréscimo nos custos energéticos associados à procura da presa, maximizando o ganho de energia do predador.

The goal of this study was to investigate the alterations of diet of a piscivorous fish (Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro) following changes in abundance of a forage fish (Moenkhausia dichroura) during the trophic upsurge stage in a reservoir. Fish samplings were taken monthly in the Manso Reservoir (State of Mato Grosso, Brazil) from March 2000 to February 2001 (period I) and from March 2003 to February 2004 (period II). The abundance of Moenkhausia dichroura in the reservoir was significantly different in both periods, representing 9.6% of the individuals in period I and 66.4% in period II. Stomach contents analyses showed that the number of prey species consumed by A. pantaneiro decreased from 41 prey in period I to 14 in period II. In the last period M. dichroura was the most important prey, comprising 95% of the diet, in contrast with the period I when this species represented only 15% of the diet. The predator and prey size relationship was positive in both periods, however was significantly different, because small and large predators consumed mainly small prey (M. dichroura) in period II. Thus, the results showed that A. pantaneiro altered its diet composition, trophic niche breadth and prey sizes to feed on more abundant and accessible prey. These alterations probably caused a decrease in energy costs related to prey searching, maximizing the energy gain of the predator.
